Last Year's Winners Say...
“I am motivated by a dream that one day, after walking across the stage to accept my diploma, I will walk over to my parents and hand it to them and tell them it was only because of them and the sacrifices they made that got me here.”
Accepted into all universities applied to and enrolling at UCLA
“After my graduation and receiving my degree in Child Psychology, I want to come back and serve the community that I grew up in and repay it for what it has taught me. I feel that my objectives in life and the objectives of the Kiwanis organization are one and the same – we both aim to serve the community in ways that will eventually lead to its success.”
Accepted into CSU, Dominguez Hills
“Imagine the chaos of 5 of us living in a one bedroom apartment in a neighborhood full of gangs, violence and infested with drugs – coming home from school and taking care of my two younger siblings while both my parents were working at their minimum wage jobs. I would help them with their home work, cook for them and clean the apartment before my Mom and Dad came home. I would begin my own studies after 1000 PM when the apartment was quiet except for the ubiquitous sounds of sirens and the roar of jet engines landing at LAX.
Accepted into all universities applied to and attending Brown University
“Everything, growing up in Lenox, had been a struggle – there were always obstacles in my neighborhood: poverty, violence, drugs, ethnic and gender bias. But I knew that education was the answer to all the obstacles that I was confronted with. My determination to find a better life guided me to academic excellence. I was accepted into UC Berkeley where I will major in Pediatric Neuroscience. Upon completion of my medical studies, I want to join Doctors without Borders to help children in the world in places where medical resources are limited or nonexistent.”
